Why are gays and lesbians against the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy?

What is so bad about it in the eyes of Gays and Lesbians if you don't mind me asking. I mean the policy was originally made to protect Gays and Lesbians from harassment and violence after the murder of Navy officer Allen R. Schindler Jr.
